As a wholesale drop shipper, we strongly urge you to listen to our advice in regards to operating and maintaining a successful drop shipping business. We've witnessed too many operations fail simply because of a few silly (but costly) mistakes. Fortunately there are thousands of wholesale drop shippers who are successfully maintaining a grip on the business so all is obviously not lost on the less experienced. But the experience of senior wholesale drop shippers can teach us a lot if we're willing to listen. One of the problems with new wholesale drop shippers is that they're so busy trying to make an impression, they miss some of the most important procedures in maintaining a thriving wholesale operation.
#1. Don't promise what you can't guarantee.
This should be the number one rule plastered across the desk of every wholesale drop shipper. Since wholesale drop shippers rarely have an inventory (if they even have one at all), it's tempting to promise the delivery of products without knowing whether the products are even available. After all, that's essentially what wholesale drop shippers do. They send the orders of retailers directly to manufacturers. But what they don't do is send an order without checking if an item is in stock - at least - the successful ones don't. And they certainly don't promise the availability of items without having it confirmed by the manufacturer that they're working with. It's just too much of a risk for responsible wholesale drop shippers to do.
#2. Know your role.
Wholesale drop shippers have only one function and that is to process orders. It is therefore inappropriate for you to discuss how a particular product is manufactured or advertised in other parts of the country or world. Conversations with your retailers should be restricted to what you offer, your prices, and your service as a wholesale drop shipper only.
#3. Price your products fairly.
Another mistake that new wholesale drop shippers make is failing to appropriately price their products. They'll either price them way too high or way too low. Pricing them to high will ward off potential customers, however pricing products too low won't generate enough funds to cover operating costs and expenses. You must experiment with your budget to find a pricing model capable of covering costs and generating a profit at the same time - all without overpricing your wares.
#4. Specialise your catalogue.
You'll find more success by focusing your products around a theme rather than including every product that you think the customers of your retailers will like. Specialising your catalogue is important for two very important reasons: First, it will make your wholesale drop shipping service stand out from the many others that are already up and running. Second, it will reduce the amount of time and energy you'll need to fill your catalogue with items and then advertise them all.
As straightforward as they may seem, following these simple words of advice could have a major impact in the success you have as a wholesale drop shipper.
